You will need a good working knowledge of PSP to complete this tutorial. This tutorial was written using version X2.

Let's go!

Open a new canvas – 500 x 500, transparent.

Open Tombstone and Lantern, resize 40%. Copy and paste onto your canvas.

Open your tube, resize 90% (if using same tube as me). Copy and paste onto your canvas. Arrange so she’s leaning against tombstone.

Open your graveyard photo. If using the same as me, resize 70%. Copy and paste onto your canvas, drag to bottom, and arrange to your liking. Save your progress.

With you photo still active, Effects>Photo Effects>Time Machine. Choose the year 1839, set the intensity to 30, and be sure “Photo Edges” is Unchecked.

Repeat the time machine effect on your tombstone and on your tube. Save.

Now, apply a drop shadow to your tube. I used -4, -4, 50, 8, color black. Save.

Right click on any of the layers in your layers palette, choose Merge>Merge Visible.

Apply your mask. Layers>Load/Save Mask>Load Mask from Disk. Source Luminance, Fit to Canvas, and Hide All Mask selected. CHECK the invert transparency box.

With your mask layer active, Image>Resize – Resize the mask layer 120%.

Right click on the mask layer – Merge>Merge Group. Save.

*My 2nd sample (bottom of page) skips the next 2 layers and goes right to the name and credits.

Add a new layer – drag it to the bottom and flood fill it white.

Open Fairy Dust 3, resize 75%, then Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Brightness/Contrast – set the Brightness to 50 and the Contrast to 0.

Copy and paste it onto your canvas, above the white layer and below your main tag layer.

Apply the Time Machine using the same settings as before. Save.

Add your name. I used the color #352c26, then applied a gradient glow in #938171. Drop shadow 2, 2, 65, 3, color black.

If you are going to resize, do so now.

Add your credits – artist copyright, license number (if applicable), tagger’s mark (if you use one), and your photo credit. I used stroke color #938171 and font Pixelette, with anti-alias set to “off”.

If you are not going to animate, save as .png file and you are done!

To animate – while still on your fairy dust layer -

Edit> Copy Special>Copy Merged

Go to Animation Shop and Edit>Paste>As New Animation (or CTRL+V)

Back in PSP, Edit>Undo (or CTRL+Z)

Go to Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Add Noise. Choose settings “Uniform” and 61%, Monochrome should be CHECKED.

Edit> Copy Special>Copy Merged

Go to Animation Shop and Edit>Paste>After Current Frame (or CTRL+Shift+L)

Back in PSP, Edit>Undo (or CTRL+Z)

Go to Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Add Noise. Choose settings “Uniform” and 62%, Monochrome should be CHECKED.

Go to Animation Shop and Edit>Paste>After Current Frame (or CTRL+Shift+L)

Still in Animation Shop – Edit>Select All (or CTRL+A)

Animation>Frame Properties – Change the display time to 15

View>Animation – You can speed up the “twinkling” by changing the display time to a number lower than 15, or slow it down by using a higher number.

When you are happy with it, save as GIF and you are done.
